I’m conscious of the black and white stances that often pop up.
😮 AI is the enemy, it’s going to take all our jobs and rule the world.
🤩 AI is the future, it going to elevate humanity to the next level.
For myself, having spent a significant amount of time thinking deeply about this, here are a few thoughts.
Firstly, AI is a tool.
At this stage, just like any tool, use it responsibly and it’s a superpower Use it irresponsilby and it will unwravel your life very quickly.
But don’t blame the tool when it’s just a tool.
Use AI… but don’t lose yourself in the process.
Secondly, humans tend to operate in extremes.
We’re in the throws of a major transition for humanity, so it’s natural we’ll see strong opinions, overreactions and a fair bit of chaos.
I am not hedging my bets until things have settled down and stabiliesed a little. (And for what it’s worth, I suspect many of the jobs being lost right now are more a reflection of a recession than AI alone. AI is the justification being used).
I also know AI is going to create a huge realm of new jobs and roles around oversight and governance.
Thirdly, I see AI as part of a long journey for humanity.
It seems to be a defining characteristic of humans to continually develope new innovative ways of doing things that are more efficient and consequently less “human”. Agricultural revolution, Industrial Revolution, Advent of computers and Smart devices etc.
AI is on the long list of human’s creations that in turn will transform humanity.
From where we stand, we can’t even see what will come next after AI, but odds are, there will be something. We’re all watching this unfold together.
So, why share this? I’m just trying to cut through the hype, extreme opinions, fear and instead add a little circumspect and history to the picture, hopefully providing a little balance and relief.
Hope it helps!
